Decorating Our Rental Home

Last week I showed you the color scheme I decided on for my master bedroom.  Well, I have some progress to share with you!

First off, let me show you where we started.  Pretty blah, right??

Things improved a tad when I got new bedding at Christmas.  You may be thinking, ''s a different room..."  Yes - we moved.  Also as a side note, you can see this room has some design challenges with that off-center window.

The king-sized shams really left something to be desired....
So, using the plain white shams as a pattern, I made new ones with a white and navy striped fabric.  The backs are solid navy with an opening to remove the pillows when needed.

Next, I made a couple of 18" throw pillows with a down fill.  I purchased the fabrics at a local fabric store.

You may have noticed the lamps in the previous photos.  Guess where they are from?  Lowes!  Guess how much they cost?  $45!!  I call that a steal!

So, that's where I am so far.  There is still work to be done, but now I can at least go into my bedroom and enjoy my surroundings a little more!

What do you think?  Do you like the direction the space is going?

  1. Looks great! Loving the striped shams and that is a huge steal on the lamps! :)

  2. It's looking pretty, Melissa! Always wondering what builders are thinking with their window placements sometimes. Don't they know they're making our jobs difficult? ha!

  3. I love the color combination and fabric choices! And the lamps are a great find! It's coming along beautifully!

  4. Looks great! Love the color palette and the fabrics are so pretty!

  5. Love it all so far! The lamps are PERFECT.

  6. Love it!! I totally love how pillows can change an entire space. The lamps are fantastic and you're right they're a steal!

  7. love the stripes and the lamps!

  8. Love the graphic stripes! Chunky b/w looks make the perfect foundation to add touches of whimsy and full on color! Great move!

    Peace. Love. LOL!

  9. I've been looking all over the place for a wide navy and white striped fabric to make a quilt for my son's bed! Where did you get it?!

I can't remember the name of it. Just do a search for navy and white and hopefully it will come up:)

  10. looks great! I just can't figure out how you picked your color palette. I would have never ever put that combination together but it looks great. How did you do it?

    1. One of my loves in life is the beach. The blues & greens remind me of this. The berry color (in accent pillow) gives the space an unexpected punch of color. Thanks for asking!

How to Accessorize an End Table or Nightstand

Stuck on how to accessorize an end table or nightstand?
There are so many ways to style/accessorize a table, and really there are no rules. However, if you aren't sure where to begin below is a list of basic items to use that you can't go wrong with:
*A lamp * Artwork/mirror *Books * Floral/branches

In addition, here are a few more accessorizing tips to get you on your way:
Use items of varied heights to keep the eye moving.  Have something short, something medium, and something tall.  Use stacked books to add height if needed.

Layer your accessories.  Don't be afraid to let your lamp cover a portion of the artwork.
Group differently shaped items together.  If everything is square/rectangle it just looks boring.
Add pops of color.
Elle Decor
Use unique items that mean something to you, such as something purchased from a trip.  These are great conversation starters, and will add a lot of character to your arrangement.

Project Reveal: Church Foyer Makeover

I apologize for being a little MIA on this blog lately!  Life has been busy lately working with local clients, my family visiting, & working on our newly purchased home.

Recently, I completed a project that I would like to share.  A local church hired me to help them redecorate their foyer area.  They wanted something new, fresh & modern that would go along with the existing paint, flooring, and lighting.

Here are the BEFORE photos:

This is what it looks like now!

My Favorite Way to Hide Toys in My Family Room

We were is desperate need of something to hide toys in our family room.  In addition, I really needed something to go along the back our loveseat.  Below, is basically the view you get when you walk into our home.  I didn't want people to walk in & the first thing they see is the bare back of our loveseat.
One day, I was meandering around TJ Maxx & spotted this cute storage ottoman.  Right away, I knew it needed to come home with me!

It has proved to be a fantastic purchase for us!  My kids can easily get toys in & out of it.  It is also a very convenient place to sit & put your shoes on before heading out the door.  In addition, it can easily be moved around to the main sitting area if extra seating is ever needed. You KNOW you have made a good purchase when your husband has said TWICE, "Melissa, buying that ottoman was a really good idea."
Need some other ideas on how to hide toys?   Cute baskets/boxes, wall pockets (for books), & cubby bookcases …
